Flipping through AM New York on the train this morning and saw an H&M ad that read, "Celebrate Earth Day! Donate clothes for kids and receive 20% off your next kids purchase." Nice to see that they're looking at social sustainability in addition to greening their clothing line.

Yesterday I received a Blue Canoe catalog - never heard of them before, but they are 100% organic. They certainly are NOT affordable or aimed at the masses, but it was delightful to get a catalog completely focused on sustainable clothing.

I wonder how much of this sudden social and environmental awareness is actually the result of the slack H&M caught this past winter for cutting up and tossing out unsold clothing instead of donating it to homeless shelters (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/06/nyregion/06about.html). Hopefully, these initiatives are truly "sustainable" and not just quick fix greenwashing to make people forget about their past transgressions...

Thanks, Beth. Now that would explain why H&M seems to have grown a green conscience overnight... will be interesting to see if they keep it up. I'll keep my green radar up on my future shopping trips!
